The annual cliess and draughts meetirig of tlio AVorking Men's Club was beid on Monday evening, Captain Fisk presiding. Tlio annual report, a resume of which lias already appeared,' was unanimously' adopted. Tho election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr. E. Mace; vice-presidents,-Mossrs. AAV J Smith, J. G. AV. Dalrymple, and Captain'Jfisk;. lion. , treasurer, . Mr. James Wilson; lion, secretaries, Messrs. Kelling and Key; Chess .Match (Committee, -Messrs. Foatonby, Eton, and Key; Draughts Match . Committee, Messrs. Erickson, Coulter, and AV. H. Smith; referee for chess, Mr. A. G. Fell (of the AVollington C.C.); referee for draughts,.Mr. J. Leggatt; consulting members for chess, Messrs. Barnes nnd 'Perry, and for draughts, Messrs. Erickson and M'Plierson; delegates to New Zealand Guess Assotiation, Messrs. J. G. AV. Dalrymple. and Featonb.v. It was decided to liominato 'Messrs. Pleasants (Wanganui), Kiunmer .(Maixricoville), ami, J. G. AV. Dalrymple . (Wellington), to-'tho New Zealand Chess Association as vice-presidents for tho southern half of the North Island. Entries will' bo received during tlio. next fortnight for tho annual handicap tourneys. The chess players will onco more bo able to compete for the Staples Cup, a ten-guinea trophy,. which was presented iii 189", and won outright in 1903. ' The following names are engraved on it: AV. Brown, 1902; R. .T. Barnes, 1899 and 1901; and F. K. Kelling, 1898, 1900, and 1903. It was pointed out at the .meeting that tho most meritorious.'wins "were tho'so of Mr. Barnes, as lie was on the scratch mark by himself throughout - tho six years that tho trophy was competed for. The meeting elosed with a hearty vote of thanks to last year's office-bearers, and a similar compliment to the chairman.
