TONNAGE CRISIS DEBATE 1 IN- THE LORDS
STATEMENT OP THE POSITION \ - By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyrielit T , „ London, May 4. Lord Bercsford initiated a debate in if lse on the serious depletion of mercantile tonnage. Ho said the war losses from submarines aind mines totalled 860 vessols, in' addition to 840 lost by fire and wrecks, making the losses 14J per cent, of the cvailable tonnage. ' Viscount Curzon,-Chairman of this tonnage Committee, said that iho Government had requisitioned 43 per cent, of Britain's tonnage, 14 per . cent, of fl Inch, totalling over 500 ships, was carrying foodstuffs and raw material for the Allies. The balance was left to tlie owners, under State surveillance. Five hundred ships wero under rcnstrucPi® Admiralty, was discussing t.ie possibility of releasing-a number of shipyards in order that tho. construction of merchant ships could be hastened.
