YACHT MODELS

(Contributed by Mr. P. M. Freyberg.)

Recent additions to the collection of yachting exhibits in the Dominion Museum arc. a half-model and an enlargement of the old Wellington crucit yacht kca, six tons. The lsca was built at Clyde Quay by T. It. H. Taylor, in 1880, /ram a Dixon Jiemp design, ior A. S. Collins, of Nelson, and sailed over, there. rihe'was at first not a success, but Professor Scott, now of Christcburch, purchased her and re-rigged andjre-bailasted her. She was then a great success, making two trips to Lyttolton in 1884 and 1886, on the last occasion winning the championship yacht race there. She also made a successful visit to Nelson for a regatta there. When owned by Professor Scott, and later by Mr. E. 0, Batkin. and ■ company, she was kept at a high pitch of perfection, and was one of the most successful racing yachts ever in Wellington. Her best trophy was the Dowues Challenge Cup, value 30 guineas, won outright in 1895. .The sumo year she raced against the Waitangi, Rona, Mascotte, Pastimo, and many other then crack yachts, defeating them air on handicaps. She competed last at tho 1896 regatta,, second class. The half model is presented by Mr. J. H. Jack, a lato'owner, and the enlargement by Mr. A. T. Bothamley, who took tho photo in "lie "eighties." Another interesting exhibit is a halfmodel of the yawl White Heather, bu'lt in recomt years. This model, presented by.Mr. G. R. Hoggard, shows the contrast between earlier and modern yachts. A silk flag presented to the cutter Dovo in 1879 at Lyttelton is of interest to Wellington, as the Dove was later the well-known steam yacht JSaunot, and still runs in the Marlborough Sounds as a mail steamer,
