. <!_ . ' . There were more marriages in England and Wales last year than in any other year on record. Births estab- / listed a new low record, and 'deaths were above the ten years' average. The net increase in the population by excess of births over deaths was 252,201, against an average of 378,360.' In the whole year the births gave a rate of 21.8 per thousand people. They decreased to 183,445 for the la«t quarter, . this and the September quarter being ' • tho only occasions in the last ten years when the figure was below 200,000. Tho last quarter was the lowest ever recorded. Marriages advanced from 294,087 in 1914, which was the. previous best on record. The increase continued through tho year, tho last quarter, 105,015, almost doubling the first quarter. «The last two quarters are the only instances on record where the marriages ..reached six figures. The total, for the prewar year, 1913, was 286,553, 73,000 less ~ than last year."
