OUR COAST DEFENCES
HOW MEN ARE CAM/ED UP.
Tours of duty have bean arranged for men who have been called up for Uawison Artillery, and the Coast Defonco Commander, Colonel Campbell, finds it. impossible to release these men when their turn for duty comes round. A man serves for a specified time) and lie is thfen released, so that he may return to his ordinary busjness till his turn of duty conies round again.
Harbour' defences must of .necessity be fully, manned, but instances havo occurred recently where employers have refused to allow their employees' to an-, swer tho order. Under some circumstances it has been tho Coast Dcfenco Commander's unpleasant duty of sending a guard to arrest the. delinquent. Colonel Campbell explains, for tho information of employers generally, that everything possible is being iiono to consider the interests of the employer, but so long as tho,Garrison Artillery is mobilised for active service the men must attend when called up. No employer has the power to refuse to ak hiiv a man to attend for service when summoned. ,
