THE GRAVES OF GALLIPOLI
MINISTER RECEIVES A VALUABLE /RECORD. The Mayor of Auckland has been pressing upon the Government the question of the suitable identification and marking of the graves of the New Zealandors who fell at-Gallipoli. On Tuesday Mr. Gunson received the following informationby telegram from the Minister of Defence:—
• i the graves of members of the Expeditionary Force who lost their lives at the Dardanelles, I have been giving considerable attention to the matter for many months past, and L eutenant-Colonel Rhodes was instructed to give special attention thereto while m Ugypt, lho graves of soldiers buried in Egypt aio being marked with suitable metal crosses and with brass inscription plates giving number, name, and rank. At Lemnos, tho princwii chaplam of the Mediteranean forces has informed me that he has kept .a careful record of all members of the campaign. A central inquiry bureau was formed at Alexandria, where all his records have been sent.
flic iSlew Zealand Records Office in kgypt has been instructed to furnish as early as possible all the particulars wcordmg burials in Lemuos. I have just received copies of photographs of cemeteries in Malta for distribution to the next-of-kin of members of the Expeditionary Force who were buried there' from the Dardanelles. Most of the graves have been marked with wooden crosses, and the Turks have been requested to respect them. Within the last few days I have received very valuable particulars recording a description of graves and the nature, place, and date of death, the name of the officiating chaplain, date of burial, and the grave site. This information is now boing classified."
