Hughes (Prime Minister of Australia) at -Edinburgh University. Sir Ludovic Grant, in presenting Mr. Hughos at the Convocation, said: "-It is impossible to hold before the youth of the nation a record moro stimulating than that of this pupil teacher, who rose by sheer forcb of oharacter to bo Trime Minister of a great Dominion;" Mr. Hughes, in returning thanks, hotly denounced the- German campaign of frightfulncss,' and concluded: "Who dares to suggest that we should mako peace with men whose lingers are dripping with blood? Peace now would mean national degradation and economio ruin. There can be no peace until this hypocritical, treacherous, and barbarous nation has been beaten to her knees." [In the early stages of his career Mr. Hughes was a teacher.]
