MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. There were over a dozen difforent defendants in. the dock) the majority of the appearances being the result of drunkenness. A youth named Andrew Boyd pleaded guilty to ten separate charges of theft. In every case the property stolen was a bicycle,, and in some cases owners of the machines had not yet been traced. Boyd was remanded for sentence until May 3. ■ George William Geggie i appeared on remand on a chargo of embezzlement at Portland. New South Wales, and he was further remanded, pending the arrival of an escort. Phillis Ferraro, 32 years of age, was sentenced to three mouths' imprisonment on a charge of vagrancy. A native of Denmark, named Emmanuel Paul Johan Neilson, was convicted of drunkenness and of assaulting the proprietor of .the house at which Neilsou lived. The assault was said to bave been unprovoked, and. the . informant stated that Neilson had previously caused trouble by his utterances in connection with tne war. A fine of £3 was Imposed, the alternative being 14 days' imprisonment. Arthur Morton, who admitted being drunk while m charge of a horse and cab, was fined 205., in default to undergo 'three days' imprisonment. For drunkenness, Frederick Sermon was fined 205., the option in_ his case also being three days' imprisonment. Several first offenders, were also dealt with.
