NEW COASTAL STEAMER. Considerable interest was taken in the arrival at Lyttelton on Sunday morning ,it ,„? ew ' steamer Tay I from Port Arthur (Tasmania). The vessel has been purchased by Messrs. Reese Bros., ol Christehurch to run in the timber trado in conjunction with the, Opouri. In some .respects (states a Christchurch paper) the . Tay I resembles the coastal steamer Ka. piti. She is 165 ft. in length, 26ft. in breadth,. and 13ft. 51n. in depth. Built at Home in 1908 by the firm of Goole and Co., she was until /recently owned by Corrigan and 00., of Syduey, and was engaged by the' Colonial Sugar Company running between Sydney and Richmond River. She has two hatches situated fore and aft of the engine-room, the former having a capacity of 20,386 cubic feet, and the latter of 12,378 cubic feet. Compared with, the Opouri, tho Tay I has a gross tonnage of 527 tons, as against 571 tons, but although a smaller vessel, she will carry about the same quantity' of timber, viz., 220,000 ft. She is single screwed, and can develop an average speed of a little over 9 knots. • Captain Carse, who brought the new stsamer Omara to New Zealand, is in command. Her new owners intend altering the steamer's name to Ouepukl.

DONGARKA AT AUCKLAND. According to a -telegraphic message, the steamer Dongarra (under charter to the A. and A. Company) arrived at Auckland from Now York yesterday afternoon. Tho Dongarra was in pro-war days a German vessel named Stolsenfeis, and it is understood that she is one of the vessels interned in the \Jnitcd States, and -which were afterwards released for trading purposes. It ■was expected that the vessel would arrive at this port oil May 1, but it now seems probable that she will enter Calliope Dock for the necessary Tcpairs to hev ciank |. shaft. / DOIiSET AT WAITARA. The F. and S. liner oreet, according to a telegraphic message, arrived at Waitara from Australia shortly after noon yesterday. The liner will subsequently vtei Picton and Lyttclton, and is due here about May 8. A ROUGH PASSAGE, The Japanese steamer Tsingtau Mam, which arrived at Sydney a little while back, met more than a- fair share of adverso weather during .her passage from •Japan, states the "Shipping List." The. trip began from Yokohama on March 29, and all went well until April 14, when suddenly a terrific hurricane sprang up. The wind blew lit the rate of between CO and 90 miles an hour, the barometer being as low as 29.37. Huge seas broke on board to tlic danger of tho crew, but fortunately no serious damage was done. Conditions lasted the same for three full days, tho vessel at times only covering three knots per hour, and then it moderated. . Telegraphic advice received last evening stated that tho Victoria arrived at Auckland enrly yesterday morning from Sydney. She should be at this port on Friday, and will proceed south the same day, It is expected tliot the Magic will be dispatched to-day for Pieton with a load of sleepers for the Railway Departmonl. She should return about next Saturday. Tho Mararoa, owing to the'late arrival of the express at Lyttelton on Monday night, diil not arrive here .yesterday incirnint until about 11 o'clock. The Tarawera arrived in port about midday yesterday from Lyttelton. She will be dispatched north this afteriifion,

Tho barqucnline Senorita, which . arrived at Auckland on Monday from Melbourne, brought as her cargo a quantity of empty bottles and some oats. The voyago across occupied 20 ■ days, tho weather lor the most part being fine. Like those of most other countries, France's shipbuilding returns for 1915 stand out poorly. In tho twelve months only 40,000 tons gross of merchant shipping was turned out of the yards, as compared with nearly 200,000 in 1914. The steamer Melbourne, which was to have brought coal from Newcastle to TVel. lington,' left the New South Wales port on Monday for Lyttelton instead. Tho Perth, which is'taking the Melbourne's place, is to load at Newcastle this week for Wellington, whero she iß„duo early next week.
