PUBLIC SERVICE ASSOCIATION

[ ' ANNUAL MEETING. ' The Wellington section of the . New Zealand Public Service Association held its annual meeting on Tuesday, Mr. W, \Y. Cook presiding. ) i Xbe chairman explained that the eeting was. held in accordance with certain regulations, and therefore it was a "machinery" meeting. The annual report, which was adopted, stated that tho membership, notwithstanding the many changes taking place in the service, had .now increased to nearly 1600. Thero are still a few officers in some Departments who have failed to appreciate the work of the association, and hold aloof from membership. No effort should be spared by Departmental representatives to induce" these officers to give the assqeiation their support, as well as retain the original members. The committee is pleased to be abli to record the fact that up to. the present date close on. three hundred members or the section have answered the country's call, and enlisted for service with the Expeditionary Forces. ! Any of these members whose snbSfcriptions were outstanding havo been made financial, and the amount due written off. • The committee has interested itself .largely in an effort to obtain the difference between their military and civil pay for all Public Servants who have c.iflisted for active service, but so far without success. A system of provisional receipts was also inaugurated by the committee during the year, and to prove the value of the system, this scheme has now been adopted by the whole of tho. association. One other matter that has engaged the attention of tho committee is the method of appointing accountants to various Departments of the Service, and a vigorous protest has been made on behalf of mombers. The cash purchase association has again proved of considerable financial • benefit tp membors, but felt that the committee's efforts in this direction have not been fully appreciated. ,It has been only after a lot of hard work that the committee has again been able to put an attractive list before members, and it is hoped that they will take full advantage of the concessions offering, otherwiso under present trade condi-. tions it may not be possiblo to obtain a renewal next year. Departmental representatives have' done and are doing gratuitously a great deal of valuable work for the association, and it is upon tho result of their efforts that" the' strength of the 'organisation depends.
