DISPOSAL OF RUBBISH

ADDITIONAL DESTRUCTORS SUGGESTED. The secretary of, the Greater Wellington Town Planning and Municipal Electors' Association (Mr. J. L. Arcus) haR addressed the following letter to His "Worship the Mayor:— "During the very; hot weather that we have had lately, the. .citizens Hying near to, or passing the rubbish tip at Hutcheson Road, have noticed a very strong, disagreeable enioll. The tip in fact is a nuisance, and the citizens concerned have asked us to place tlio tacts before you personally,. well knowing that you will. interest yourself in the matter and have it remedied. ' If the offensive matter were covered with eartli each da.v the trouble would be minimised. My association is of opinion that the • time has arrived when the question of additional destructors should be gone into. It cannot be said that the public health is improved, by rubbish being carted during the hours when most people are about, from outlying districts such as Wadestown and Berhampore through the main streets and' right into the very centre of the city, fov destruction. It would be better to have destructors at the outskirts. Two members of the executive, the Hon. J. G, W. Aitken and Mr. Thomas BallinE®r, state that they were members of the City Council when the last destruc< tor was decided on, and they were informed it was of a. capacity as to be able to destroy the tins. This apparently has not proved to be the capacity of the new destructor. Another matter arising out of this, is the question of the destruction of trado refuse. This is not always received at the destructor, and the unfortunate owner has to got it carted away, with the result that it is often surreptitiously ''dumped" on to vacant sections near .habitation. This fact points obviously to tlie fact that something better is Wanted than our present system of destroying rubbish if "Wellington is to retain the proud distinction of being the healthiest city of the British Empire."
