' TO-DAY'S RACES. IBT QLINCOB.I : Racing will be resumed at Trentham to-day, ivhen a good programme is to be presented. The usual up-to-date train arrangements have been made, and the times and departure are as on the opening day. , , The. champion filly Desort Gold lias been withdrawn from the Trentham Gold Cup, as has Nones, and the probable starters for the two miles' weight-for-age event are:— Mr. T. H. ..Lowry's, ch. h. Balboa, - by Varco—Nerve, 4yrs.; 9st. Mr. G. Hunter's ch, g. Indigo, by Mystification—Munjista, 4yrs'.; Bst. 111b. Mr; W. G. Stead's br,. c. Eligible, by Boniform—Class, 3yrs., 7st. 131b. '' After his good showing in the St, Leger, backers may not look much further for a favourite than the three-year-old Eligible, who lias a big pull in the weights. He may be as much above the others a 6 Desert Gold was above' the Challenge .Stakes field. It is to be Tegretted that there are not more runners, but the club lias done well with this race, in the past," and is not likely to think of removing it. It is a case'of taking the lean years with the good'ones. Balboa should'hold Indigo safe, as after getting badly left in the Thompson Handicap, the Auckland Cup winner then ran a sterling race, and finished sixth. As on the opening day the Jumpers' Flat Race will be the , opening event. Now that the rain has'come on, H. Hickey will no doubt seize the opportunity of giving the National winner'Hurakia a race, and if -he. strips well he will receive plenty of support, albeit it should 6e borne in wind that it is his first race tor many months, and no matter, how well a 'horse works he .is rarely at his best to win a distance race first time out. Vladian may rank as favourite • utter his first day's showing while Parewanui and Harbour Light should do better to-day. ' Chillies r&n a mile on Thursday with Ost. lib. on his back in lmin. 41sec„ and if he acts up to this to-day he should iiave" plenty to say in the decision of the Hutt Handicap, which is a event. Tariugamutu, 9st. 111b., will be assisted by the rain, which has taken place sting out of the ground, and on tins point it can be said that the filly handles ivei<rht well, vide her running at Tanherenikau at' New Tear. Backers may award favouritism to Oliver's mount, who saddled up reinaftably well on the opeiiweight, in the Muritai Handicap, seven furlongs, is Seadown, runner up to Halina on the opening day. Tlie Downshire gelding is in two races, but his owner will probably start in this event as ho was running on at. the aurt of the Tinakori Handicap. , Should •Chillies be successful in the preceding event his form will cause backers to go for Cleft, who was only half a head away on Thursday. Heel Tap is also likely to receive plenty of backing, as he was unlucky in running the Tinakori Handicap, and then finished right up. The big handicap oi the day has set students of form thinking hard, and on the appearance of the acceptances yesterday the open nature of the race was freely ■ vo m men ted upon. Multiply has only got to run up to Ms first day's-form to be very dangerous, and as a matter of fact \ie can be relied upon to" go better witll the sting out of the ground. Montana (0 Price) also goes better with the going on' the dead side, and bis party are very confident. Blackall is generally !i better, liorso for a race, but' he is pretty iorvs'artl as is evinced by a nule at lieadnuarters in lmin. 43sec., which was as good as was runon that, particular morning Moulu, 7st. 21b., is consistent, and has been placed in all .but two of his races this season. -A newcomer in the two-year-old handicap is Bjorneberg, a winner at Ellerslie. ■ His subsequent performances wero poor, but lie will not do his best for a'hgW: bov whereas to-day O'Shea will take the inount. Koesian, whose record is three starts and three times second, may be , depended upon to. fill a place, while Mcnetaus finished on surprisingly . well on the opening day. Hyllus met with interference on the opening dnv, and he should also go better in the soft going. Of the IMit weights, Tinkler did the best, as she had to jump Lady Jiilworth when she (ell, and was then right up at the finish. Sweet Corn is supposed not to handle iveWit well, but /backers may regard her ns likely, to handle Bst. Gib. well enough to beat the, lot s'lie is meeting to-day. It has to be Temembered\ that the two other place-getters are out of the way,and the' others were well back. Astor's rider lost' an iron on the opening day, mid thus hampered finished fourth. Sea Lord is also expected to go better in the going, as are Battle Eve and Recorder. The two latter are unreliable, and may turn up nny N day. Oliver will be on Sweet Corn. As on the opening day the concluding event again promises to be a facer for backers. Shrill, who was a red-hot order on'the first day, will be neslected , today, but backers may be malting a mistake, and it is always a bad policy to condemn a reputed (?ood one because of dm Door Derformanoß, Ohiwai, Tango,
and Ring Lupin were all cIo.-se up on the opening day. W. Bell, who was hurt on the opening day, is making a gcod recovery, and expeots to be about, to-day, though it will ue some time.before 'he can ride again. C.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING. • By Atuoaai.on.
