PERPLEXING PROBLEM IN THE. BANKS. ; By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright ("Times" and Sydney i "Sun" Services.) (Rec. March 27, 6.5 p.m.) London, March 27. The banks are experiencing difficulty, in disciplining the armies of girl clerks. In one institution it was found impossible to persuade the girls- to bo punctual,: while the lunch. hour became telescopic. They are appointing wonion inspectors to supervise the girls' comings and goings. : Tlio wedding took place at Pakahu last week of Mr. Frank Orchard, eldesi son of Mr. G. Orchard, of Hastings to Miss M. Lean, second daughter of Mr. Charles Loan, of Longlands. Pastor Edridgc performed the ceremony. Tho bridesmaids were Miss Myrtle Lean and Miss Ada Orchard, and the best man was Mr. J. Jiegley, of Hastings. The groomsman was Mr. N. Clark; of Makotuku. St. Andrew's Church, Hastings, has a roll of honour of 73 men and one nurse. Of this number four have given their lives, and there is now a movement to have a special and permanent memorial to the fallen.
Major and Mrs. Brierton. have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Whelan, Menzies Ford, for the past few days. Major Brierton joined the Main Expedi. tionary Force in New Zealand, was badly wounded at Gallipoli, invalided to England, and later to New Zealand for some months. Ho returns to the front again shortly.
Nominations for the various offices of the Victoria League will be received by the secretary (Mrs. Chatfield) up till Monday, April 3. On tho following day, at 5i15 p.m., members of., the council and executive are asked to attend a meeting in tho Mayor's 'room, Town Hall.
Mesdames H. Followes and TJ. Shannon will be in charge of the Red Cross shop in Woodward Street on .Wednesday.
The marriage of Mr. George Geoffry Sale, son of Professor G. S. Sale, late of New Zealand, to Miss Mary Jean Robinson, daughter of Mr. Thomas Robinson, West Hartlepool, was recently celebrated at Cohvich, Staffs, England, by tlie Rev. Canon Debree (states tlio "British Australasian").
Tlie funeral of Miss Constance Howan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. Howan, of Daniel Street, Wellington, who was drowned while bathing in Forrest Lake, Hamilton, took placo at Foxton on Sunday.
At the conclusion of the very highly successful three nights' season of "Charley's Aunt," which was concluded at tlie Grand Opera House on Saturday night, the' performers, orchestra, and friends, adjourned to the' "Charloy's Aunt" Social Club Rooms, E. T. Taylor's Buildings, where supper was partaken of, and the club, congratulated by Mr. L. W. Hanlon, in a. happy little speech, on the fine result achieved; both from an artistic and financial point of view. Items were contributed bv Miss Mario Fix, Mr. Byron Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert F. Wood, Mr. W. AV. Crawford, Mr. Mansfield, and Mr. Norman Aitken ; Mr. Frank Thomas acted as accompanist.
