POULTRY INDUSTRY

The Conference. . Judging from tlie ! remits forwarded by the various afliliated societies, thera appears to bo nioro business to sot before tho couiur»:nco than was anticipated, We thought 6om« months ago that, owing to war conditions, the conference wtfuld scarcely justify tho expense, but we are pleased to no to that our judgment was premature,. Individual poultryme.u have come forward uoblj'j and joined either as active or associate membora. Their support indicates a genuine interest in'tlio work of the association, and a desire to seo its usefulness continued. Thoro are many more who can.still give it their support. In all kinds of undertakings there ar<> many who will allow others to pay up, do the work, obtain the benefits at others' expense, whilo they themselves hang lire. Such a position is not .very enviable, and ono wonders at their mean-spiritedncss 'l'ho affiliation list also shows thai; thoro are -many clubs and oircles and associations that could lie of assurance The.y maku plenty of noise in. their own little way, I but when it comos to paying the annual • feo and sending a delegate it is another subject. It is a pity some conscriptivo method oonld not? b» adopted, or else they were dis-associated with tlie benefits from others' labour. It is tlje old, old story—the willing workors pay up and do the work, while the sluggards enjoy. There are few who come forward, as one poultryniitn. wo know, and say: ''I will go as a delegate. If I am unable to do so J am willing to pay tho expenses of my substitute." That's a spirit'that should imbue all. Not thai; all could do as' much; but each could do a little. We do not expect every poultrjiuan to be present—many jould not afford it—but wo do expect a'modest half-crown, towards tho expenses of conference, from which all enjoy the benefits. Even so small a gift removes the indictment of being a shirker. In life there are many worse instances of shirking than this. There are some who will not pay up or give their services -to savo tho .Empire. How much more must We expect to see shirkers in the poultry industry! What shall the Willing ones do? Shall we take up a similar attitude, and because all will not give we will not do so ? What would lie our position in tho Empire if the same spirit were exercised ? We should lose our glorious' horitage. We sli'ould never make progress.. It is the : same with our industry. If the willing workers hung fare they would never enjoy any beneiits, make progress, or develop their business. It is one of the vagaries of life that parasites can live from the exertions of others. Now then, producers, if you aro anxious please make good. Don't expect the executive and oilicors to do all the work, bear all the expanse, and secure all "the beneiits, while you sit back, take all and give nothing. Look oyer the names of the active and associate members, and if your name is not there get it there at once, so that When tho conference meets, the men who aro willing to give of bent 4 are assured of your interest and support. The secretary's address is: N.Z.P.A., Box 688/ Christchuroh. He will be only too pleased- to furnish foil particulars of membership to all inquiring poultrymen. Wairarapa Egg Clrolp. , : The sixth annual meeting of tfie Wairarapa Egg Circle was held in tho secretary's office on March 14. Mr. 11. H. Armstrong (chairman) presided over a fair attendance. Mombers were present from Carterton, Greytown, and ! Morison's liusli. The chairman and others, speaking to tho report and bal-. a nce-shect, considered that under the existing circumstances, the past year's operations had been most successful, and the outlook for tho present year much brighter, particularly as the prices for feed were likely to be more reasonable .than for the past eighteen months. The following olbcers were elected for th eiisuing year Committee, Messrs. H. H. Aimstrong and W, T. Tucker (Carterton)','A. Murray (Greytown), R. O. Jarrett, and Jas. Tillars" (Masterton); hon, auditor, Mr. Mark Maxton (Greytown); secretary a'nd treasurer, Mr. H. M. Boddington (reflected); delegates to the New Zealand Poultry Association Conference, Messrs. H. M. Boddington and R. 0. Jarrett. Kemits were discussed and passed for conference. A .hearty vote of .thanks to thn chairman, committee, and secretary for their past year's services terminated "a successful meeting.—"Wairarapa Ago," Friday, March 17, 1016. 1 Remarkable Progreso. The Canterbury Egg Circle report remarkable growth duriiiy January, and February; The following" aro the returns: —Eggfc . . sold - ror January, 10,682 dozen; realised £712 2s. 6d. Eggs sold for February, 13,502 dozen; realised £956 25.-- Evidently poultryproducers in Canterbury know'the circle to be a good thing, and mipport it, The, Need for Mora circles, . Experience goes to show that producers who market their eggs on tho eggoircle system are going to rulo the prices for eggs in the Dominion. The stamping and grading are a guarantee of quality. It is- usual for eggs of this class to be marketed weekly, but there is now a demand for strictly "new-laid" eggs, and those producers who market their eggs bi-weekly are going to capture the choice trade. Quality talks, and the public are beginning to realise the value of new-Jaid eggs. The circle system has come to stay, and he who helps to get them formed -in every centre is accomplishing a useful work. It would help considerably to regulate the Dominion's egg trade if circles were in full working order in every centre. Government Support. The assistance given the poultry in- ■ dustry the past two years , has been most gratifying. In every new industry there is'always a great deal to put 1 up with* in the multifarious ! requests from beginners, and the Department of Agriculture has had its fair share from poultry men. They ha vet borne tlio ordeal with remarkable patience, and it must be to them a.great source of pleasure to note the progress that is being made in the industry and the promise it gives of extension. The New Zealand Poultry Association has done much to organise producers, and from this body the Department can now tako its guidance in the matter of.' requests from producers. Last year the Government gave effect to some very important 1 legislation, and its is certain that the deliberations of- the coming conference will result in making request of the utmost urgency.
Mr. J. W. Green, of Christchnrch, president of the; New Zealand Utility Poultry Club, will act as delegate this year for his club.
