< ' _ Rome, March 22. A wireless message states that the Austrians have abandoned O.ernowitz, capital of Bukowina. Tho Russians liavo crossed the Dniester, complololy overwhelming the Austrian- defensive positions.

Petrograd, March 23. 'A Russion communique states: —"There liave been lively infantry actions nlong the whole front. The Russians captured a co'uple of villages and some woods on .the Jacobstadt sector, and a line of enemy trenches in tho Mik-aimiy-Lake Sekly. sector. "There was desperate infantry fighting north of the village of Postava, in tho Vileita-Mojeika- region, where the enomy is directing violent counterattacks owing to our troops capturing trenches and machine-guns. < "The fighting on the' south-western shore of Lake Narotch is developing in our favour, despite ,the asphyxiating gases and the enemy's murderous (ire. Wo forced three lines of tho enemy's trenches, and stopped a counter-attack by using projectiles with asphyxiating poisonous gases.'
J GERMAN PRESS SCENTS APPROACHING TROUBLE.

Amsterdam, March 23. The German newspapers admit that the Russian attacks are becoming heavier. Fresh forces are being brought in, and an even stronger offensive , is expected, with the double'purpose of relieving the pressure on Verdun and locally improving the Russian positions, which are lower than those of tliQ Austro-Germans.
FOODSHIPS SUNK BY THE RUSSIANS OFF VARNA

Bucharest, March 23. The Russian Fleft torpedoed and sank a 7000-ton steamer, the Esperanza, laden with foodstuffs, off Kaliakrla, and flying the.German 1 ensign. She was bound for Constantinople. ! The Russians also' sank twenty food-laden sailing vessels.

POPULATION EXHAUSTED BY GERMAN LOOTEEs'
(Rec. March 24, 1.10 a.m.) Petrograd, March 23. A Russian communique'states: 'wo occupied Ispahan after a fight. The population had been exhausted by looting by Germans, and the mercenaries welcomed us with enthusiasm."
