YACHTING PICTURES
NOW ON VIEW AT THE MUSEUM
Every yachtsman as well as every enthusiastic follower of the fascinating pastimo should make a point of visiting, the yachting exhibit which has been coinmenoed at the Dominion Museum, Three new pictures of exceptional interest for aquatic sports have recently been added to the collection, 'which now bids far to be a very fine one. Pride of place must bo given to a fine enlargement, measuring 3ft. by 2ft., of thewell-known 40ft. linear rater Tlielma, built by Logan Bros., of Auckland, in 1898, and for lonp the cham. pion there until displaced, by tlie Ariki. The picture is by Mr. Winkelmann, of Auckland, who ivon the world's prize for marine subjects at the PanamaPacific Exhibition, and is aline example of the high standard in marine photography reached in New Zealand. A spirited water-colour of the 14-ton yacht Maritana 'in a southerly gale off Cape Turnagain, whilst on her way down from Auckland to Wollingtoli ill 1891, painted by Captain Ryan, is also a fine subject. The third picture js a panel of foul photographs illustrating tne start and finish of the last yacht race for' the championship of New Zealand, held at Lyttelton on New Year's Day, 1896. The first prize of £100 was won by Professor Scott's Zephyr on time allowance from the Waitangi, owned by Messrß. D. Georgeson and Co.. of Wellington, which took j the second prize _ of £20. The first photograph of the series shows the Zephyr, Pastime and Mascotte, of Lyttelton, crossing the line. The second one shows the Wellington yacht Waitangi starting, and the third ona shows the same vessel finishing first, and the last one the ex-champion Mascotte finishing. This fine series was taken by Mr. G. Norton, of WelSTigton. The picture Thelma was presented by Mr. Winkelmann, the Maritana painting by Mr. AY. A. Wilkinson, of Auckland, editor of the "New Zealand Yachtsman," and the photos of the Lyttelton Tace in 1896 by Mr. P. M. Freyberg. Tho collection at the Museum now comprises 15 enlargements, 3 watercolour paintings, ajid 3,half models of famous New Zealand yachts, and will, it is hoped, be added to from time to time, and in the new Museum building should form a worthy section of the proposed navigation room in that institution. There is no doubt that in a seaport liko Wellington anything dealing with the sea wilj be immensely popular, and rightly so in a sea-loving race such as the British race always has been.
