Tho embargo restricting tho export of hides of 451b. and over was the subject of a letter received from tho Prime Minister by the provincial executive of tho Auckland Farmers' Union at its meeting last week, in reply to a communication from the president of the union, Mr. A. A. Boss. In explanation Mr. Massey stated that the Government required an enormous number df pairs of boots for military purposes, certainly not less than 100,000 would be required for the present year. Australia was in exactly the same position; and the Commonwealth Government had not only prohibited the export of hides, but tanners wcro buying large quantities in Now Zealand." In consequence tho New Zealand Government was fcoliuc; the shortage of leather required for the manufacture of the boots, and had therefore prohibited tho export of hides. As soon as conditions became norma] tho embaivo would be removed.
