THE TURF

MASTERTON RACES

CONCLUDING EVENTo.

By. Telegraph.—(Special Correspondent.) Masterton, Slaroh 17. Showery weather was experienced for the second day of the races. The totalisator handled .£15,239, making & total of .£31,417 for tha meeting. The going was pretty much on the heavy side ior the opening event, .in'.which Lord Laddo and Whisperer were withdrawn. Maraetotara (Oliver) and Mahzoltov (W. Young) were the favourites, though they moved anything but attractively in. the' preliminaries. The start was a good one, but Franbonnet gut squeezed back, and then on going upon the fence was again sent back. Ormesby was out in front to the straight entrance, where Bradatnunte ran past him, and won m the easiest manner possible. Lady Nolan was third, and Franbonnet next. All the acceptors went to the post for the Telephone Handicap. Interlude was a very strong favourite, and she jumped out in front, but slipped badly on entering the straight, and lost any chance she possessed. Watchful was also slipping a good deal, and tailed off early. Martlet was nearest to Interlude, at the straight .entrance, and she led till a furlong from •home, when Lady Black took charge, and ridden out just lasted long enough to beat Botanist, who finished very fast. Martlet was a length, and a half away, an 4. then came the favourite. '' ■Several of the runners in the Hack Scurry were well backed, and at the finish a good race went to Perrier (Golden Gate—Tahua) by a neck from Con)ultation. Tho winner is owned by Mr. W. Duncan, a pairon of P. Tilley'a stables, and this mado his third win at the meeting. Miss Pau and-Master Boris showed a lot of pace at tho start, but they could not see out the half-mile. A very warm favourite in Melodist got beaten ,in the High-weight Hack Handicap, which Benison, a half-brother to Sir linox; won very easily from Waioture, and the favourite. The last namea was fractious at the barrier, but he got off on terms, and after allowing Otakura and Critic to make play for half a mile, the favourite and Waioture went to the front, but Benison' vas always ihandy, and in tho straight he was given his head, and won easily. The winner is owned by Mr. H. Nee, and trained by T. Higgins. He was well fancied by his party, and paid a good price on the machine.

Orleans, Watchful, Byron, and Chillies r»re withdrawn from the Waipipi Handicap. Montana, who had Oliver in tile mum to-day, got through the heavy going well, and scored from Ararat (C. Pricej. The latter rode tho winner on the opening day, but had to get oft' to-day to steer Ararat. Red Ribbon, the third horse, did not run very well in tho going. Still another triumph for the Fordell 6tablc came in the Railway Hack Handicap, which went to Cello, winner of the Maulen on the opening day. Lord Laddo was runner-up. . Maraetotara, who had raced earlier in .the day, was the only withdrawal. The well-backed division in tho Final Welter included Chillies and Pariform, but both failed, the winner turning up in the little-fancied Jean Laddo, who was in at the minimum. Another unfunded one in Black Lupin acted well in tho heavy goin», and got second piace. The Elysian filly Ohiv;ai, who was making her first appearance at the meeting, ■was made favourite in the Electric Hack Handicap, and she duly scored, being followed homo by Captain , Glossop, . who finished just outside the placed division in the concluding event on the opening jay.
