NOTES AND COMMENTS

There will be racing at Masterton on Thursday and Friday of this week, and at Wavmate on Thursday. Tlie last named is only a one-day fixture, but good stakes are given, and the Cup is worth 800 fots., while there is no race of a less value than 100 60vb.
A feature of the acceptances at Waimato on Thursday is the number of horses with dual engagements. Hornbeam and Saniisen have been accepted for in three events, and no less than fourten others figure in two races.
Though sho won but one ra'ce—a maiden at Otaki—Limpet is asked to give weight at Bulls to winners of several races, and to <\nc of her own. age, Jloutoa' Queen, sho is set to concede 131b. Under tho circumstances tho Yarco filly is _ not likely to makj the trip to the R-angitikei meeting.
Chillies is engaged in- two events on the opening day of the Masterton meeting, but he is said to be a certain starter in the open sprint race, and coupled with Montana he w.as yesterday supported for a good stake. It is not surprising to learn that Montana is fancied, for ho scored in the big handicap at Trentham in the spring with 7st. 121b., and in tho Masterton Cup he has a pound loss to carry.
L. Wilson and C. Emerson' wont south last night to ride at Waimate on Thursday. Wilson will bo on R-eval in the Cup, and Emerson will ride Peronilfa.
in former years the Karamu stables used to be well-nigh. unbeatable, aur. last week's performance by the Hon. J. D. Ormond's team resembled olden times. At tile meeting just concluded the wearers of tho cerise jacket won five races, and ran a dead-heat in another.
The three leading jockeys, J. O'Shea, B. Deeley, and C. Emerson, havo cach ridden over forty winners already, this season. On present appearances it does not seem probable that Deeley's record of eighty-nine wins for a singlo season will be beaten this year. At present O'Shea (4S) i 3 leading Deeley by four, and a similar number away comes Emerson.
A novel point arose at Napier on Saturday when tho right of tho two English fillies, Shrill and Revalenta, winner and runner-up in the Scurry, to a breeding allowance was challenged, the contention being that as the race was one of "set weights" no allowance could be claimed Tile matter was freely discussed beforo tho race, and it was known that in tho event of cither of the fillies being successful tlte position would be challenged. Ilulo jo, Part XIX. of the Kuto of lineing, is very explicit on tho matter, and it would seem as if the stewards had no cption but to decide as they did. in favour of tho fillies carrying the allowance The rule reads as follows': "Tn all races oilier t.hnn handicaps in which horses sired north of the collator, and foaled bs tween January 1 and A 1, inclusive, are engaged, there slmll be allowed to such horse—two-year-olds, 1011>.; tlu'ce-year-olds, 71b.: four-year-olds, Sib.
Tier four wins in succession havo put Martini Air at tho ton of tho hnndicap in hack cln?s, and at Bulls sho and Zola are regarded as tho hest of the lo+, engaged in the Rack Welter, the pair being awarded 9st. 131b., with an Sst. minimum. Early in the spring tho Karamu gelding ITylatus showed great promise, and it'was anticipated in some quarters that he -would be the stable elect for the Derbies. but at Riccarton in November he went wTong, and was off the scone till the Napier meeting last week. At Greenmeadows he ran a rood race on the openin" day. and dead-heated with Spain on Saturdav. ITylatus is a fine big horsu that mav later on be able to jump fenc"s. n department he will doubtless he out to early, as !he stable is very weak in junipers now.
«T. F. Quinlivan arrived In town from Hustings last evening. He has come down to meet Del Monte and Night Owl who are being sent, back from Sydney by 10-inorrow's boat. Del Monto won the Breeders' Plate as a two-year-old, but since then she has been a failure. Night Owl is a full-brother to Blaet-all. but he, too, has been a failure in Sydney.
At the conclusion of tho racing at Napier tho Klunor filly Spain cbanired hands for 300gns. Tho new owner is M*. J. Ha.rdlev, of Hawcra. and the three-year-old will bo trained by D. J. Goodwin.
That there was no tluko about_ the win of Shrill iu tlio Scurry at Napier is proved by tho fact that the English filly was left' standing at the barrier, but then easily caii r rHt and bwit ino field at tlie fiyifih' of tho five furlooss«
