~AINTENANOIS ORDERS
At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, bet'oro Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, A. T. M'"\Yilliam, who was over £82 in arrears with payments due for tho maintenance of his ivifo, was sentenced to three months'' imprisonment. .The Magistrate directed that warrant should be suspended if certain weekly payments are leapt up from date. For disobedience of a maintenanco order, Andrew Millar Legge was sentenced to twenty-one days' imprisonment, arrest to be suspended on payment of ss. per week. AVilliam Dryden Olliver was sentenced to thirteen days' imprisonment for fail -.ire to make small weekly payments for his mother's support, sentence to be suspended oil payments of 3s. 6d. pet week in future.
Frederick Edwards was ordered to pay arrears of maintenance forthwith vc go to gaol for three days. Alfrecl Gregory, who owed the sum of £1, under a maintenance order, was lined £2 and sentenced to three days' imprisonment. Payment forthwith will •■osult in tho suspension of the warrant for his arrest. Alargarct Weaver was granted summary separation from her husband, Thomas Weaver, who was ordered to maintain her at the of 255. per wefck"Sor herself and child. STEALING AN OFFICE COAT. Arthur Norton pleaded not guilty tc> stealifig an office coat from the premises of the Gear Meat Company, whero he had been employed in scrubbing lloors. He further denied that he had stolen a gold bangle, the property of Mrs. Ftorrie Arnold. When arrested by Constable E. J. M'Kelvcy on.Saturday, Norton had both the stolen articles in his possession, and, although no offered an explanation, the Magistrate considered it was too weak to be accepted. There was a previous conviction against the accused, for assault, and, as the thefts for which ha appeared yesterday were committed on different' dates, he was sent to gaol for one month.
A young man, named Joseph WinStanley, appeared on remand for soih tence on a charge of stealing a coat at Auckland. Tho report of the Probation Officor was favourable, and WinStanley was admitted to probation for a per/ad of six months. EXPENSIVE TRAIN TRIP. Joseph Welsh ploiuTetl guilty to charges of drunkenness, obscene language, and travelling on tho train, between Ngahauranga and Wellington without paying his fare. Inspector Elendrey informed the Court that the accused had been arrested on Lambton Station after having caused a Seal of trouble oil the train. He traveled without a ticket, and. on being approached by tho guard for (lis Fare, lie made use of very filthy language, and continued doing so for tho remainder of the trip. Tho Magistrate Impose!! fines totalling £4, the accused being ordoied to pay a further sum of 19s. for cobts avd witnesses' expenses. Default was fixed at one month's imprisonment. OTHER CASES. Richard James Webster, his wife CMildred Bessie Webster), and a young woman, named Ethel Towner, appeared id the dock together. The Wcbsters wore charged with keeping a brothel in Clayton Avenue, an<T the woman Towner was charged with assisting Tn tho manageinont thereof. On the application of Mr. 11. F. Q'Leary, who appeared for the Websters, the eases were adjourned for a week. The. three accused were admitted to bail. Annie Smith, Thomas Forsyth, and Marshall John ,')en~ns, Who were convicted of drunkenness, were all fined "Os.. the usual light being fixed. Several first-offending inebriates wero also dealt with.
