SIR JOSEPH WARD IN THE SOUTH.

Sir Joseph Ward (Minister of Finance) visited Winton this morning, and delivered an address in support of Che' new recruiting scheme. .Despite the inconvenient hour the meeting was a representative one, and well attended. Sir Joseph Ward explained the sciiome exhaustively, and made a strong appeal for co-operation with the Government). He mentioned tliat the medical standard had been lowered sinco last year. Men rejected should be invited to offer their services aagin. The Cental Association had been instructed to deal with teeth troubles of recruits rree of charge. The country had a very heavy responsibility, and there was nothing to justify any of them allowing their political aspirations or inclinations to come between them and preventing the war from being woiu outright. That was the reason that iie had not raised a political issue of any kind since the formation of the National Cabinet. That was the only way they could stand shoulder to shoul rier, and'thcre could be no possible set. tiement of political difficulties until Ihey had their victories behind them and an honourable peace declared. In conveying a vote of thanks, the Mayor assnrcu Sir Joseph Ward of the support of the Winton district for the recruiting scheme. Afterwards fair Joseph and Lady Ward were entertained at dinner by the Mayor and counci'. iors. MEETING AT GORE. Core, March IJ. Sir Joseph Ward also had a successful recruiting meeting at Gore, when he delivered a rousing speech to an audience af about 1000. At the close, Mr. G. J. Anderson, M.P., moved, "That this meeting of Gore citizens heartily thanks Sir Joseph Ward for his address; ,that it approves and adopts the scheme of the National "Recruiting "Board, and pledges itself to assist the committees of the district 111 mafiing it a thorough success.'.'
The motion was carrie 3 unanimously, and with enthusiasm, the meeting closing with cheers for Sir Joseph Ward, who was subsequently entertained at' supper by the Recruiting Committee at the Southland Club Hotel.
