SOLDIERS' HOSTEL
A meeting of the Soldiers' Hosts Committeo was hold on Wodncsdaj night. Miss P. Myers was elccted permanent chairwoman. Mesdanies Wilford, Radford, and Fletcher wore appointed to act in conjunction with tl« secretary as a Furnishing Committe< and to oxanuuo and report as soon at possible; Jlcsdames Ktrby, Weston, mid Miss Arrow to work in with till chairman, secretary, and Mr. M'Laron of the Patriotic Socicty, in connectioi with the "Charloy's Aunt" Co. Mrs. Wilford, Miss P. Myers, and tin secretary wcro deputed to meet tho Wni Relief Association Executive, and tlis cuss tho question of hostels. A hearty vote of thanks was accordec all who by their work or donations hat assisted the committee to firmly establish a- Home for Returned Soldiers whe have 110 homo in the city. Work is etil going' 011 111 that direction, and fundi coming to hand. The gross fund n( the present timo amounts to abotii £1000, which includes a grant of £30C from tho War Relief Association. Tin "Charley's Aunt" Company lias kindlj donated the takings for their performances on' March 23, 21, > and 25, the Hostel Committee to assist. _ In conncc; tion therewith, it was decided to,sell sweets during the performances. Special mention .was made of the good work of the Blenheim and Woodville women. Tho Blenheim Red Cross Society held a day in tho streets, and collected £58 7s. Od. The Woodville Patriotic Society granted 5 guineas. The ladies held'a sale of produce at the Horticultural Show, and realised £C 15s. Mr. J. A. Nicholas gave £1, making in all £13. The secretary of the Woodville Horticultural Society has forwarded 7 cases of fruit and 3 sacks of vegetables. The following additional special donations to tho hostel arc thankfully acknowledged:—A. Mac Donald (Ngakanui), and Friends, 3 months' supply of meat; Mr. Holmes-Warren, }-ton potatoes; Or. H. Thomas and Co., 1 month's supply of vegetables; J. Myers and Co., 18$ dozen crockcry; P. Hayman and Co., 8 dozen crockcry: "Anonymous," 21 dozen cups, tumblers, basins, etc.; "A Friend," soveral games; Sims Hardware, carpet sweeper, buckets, otc.; Bird and Jensen, billiard table. In connection with "Anzac Remombrance Day," tho committeo wishes to thank the following:—Messrs.. Coulls, Culling and Co., printing for trams ana armlets; C. M. Banks and Co., stationery and printing, rubber stamps; Chandler aud Co., freo advertisement on trams; Gear Co. and Barber and Co., lambs; Preston and Co. and Rod. moat and pickles: Mesdames C. Bidwill, A. Martin, Corrigau, Holmes-Warren, Souter, Morton, M. Holmes, E. Riddiford, V, Riddiford, A. PearceMessrs. Wilkinson, W. Hume, Trevethick. G. Nash, Galloway, produce and flour; Batley (Moawhanga), 2 cases vegetables; Baldwin (Hutt), flowers; Pupils of Hutt District High School, (lowers and vegetables; and many other snlall donors. Votes of thanks were passed to:— Jtipp's Band, and to the chairman of the Patriotic Society (Mr. Welford), the secretarv (Mr. J. Lewis), and Mr. and Mrs. M'Laren, Privates Tall and Oswald, and to the Indies who worked so hard and successfully in selling buttons, These kind offices are again asked for in connection with the performances of the "Charley's Aunt" Company. Miss P. Myers will be glad to hear of the names of those again willing to help our boys. Judd of Greytown, has taken a- cottage at Lyall Bay and is staying there with her family Mrs. M. Moxton is also staying there for a short visit.
