CITY CRICKET

EAST DEFEATED BY CENTRAL. MORE BOAVLING FEATS. Fine weather favoured tho local cricketers 011 Saturday afternoon, when there was quite a good Attendance, at tho Basin Reserve to see the finish of the three mutches, which wore commenced tho previous week. Principal interest centred ill tho Central-East fixture, which resolved itself into a first-innings duel. On the first day, Central had put on 2-13 runs before the Inst wicket fell, and East's first batsman, Baker, had gone rather cheaply. Gibbes and Jlidlano fared no better on the second day's play, anil but for a splendid elfort by M'Girr, the match would have been a one-sided affair. Jl'Girr had almost placed his side in a winning position beforo ha was caught, but the last three men were not equal to the task of making the few remaining runs required. Thus Central secured a twopoint win by 2G runs on the first innings, the last wicket falling at 5.10 p.m. The Trentham team appeared satisfied with a first-day score of 206 runs for nine wickets. The innings was declared closed, and Sandman found that the University batsmen were not ablo to do much with his bowling. Requiring 167 runs to avert an innings defeat, the. University men were able to compile but 93, so that Trentham won by an innings and 71 runs. Petone dofeated North by an innings and 20 runs, tho bowling of Srayrk and Brice being tho deciding factor. Taken over tho two Saturdays, tho bowling figures of Sandman, Smyrk, and Brice were remarkably good. In tho second inningg Old Boys scored 188 for six wickets against Hutt, who registered 107. Altogether tho former scored 336 against 211. CENTRAL AND EAST. Central, first innings 243 East—First Innings. Baker, c. and b. Robinson 15 Gibbes, b. Dind 26 Nash, 'run out 0 Midlane, 0.
