Smith, fireman, Petone (Infantry). John M'Lean, labourer, City (Infantry). Frederick G. Jackson, farmer, City (Infantry). Recruiting Amongst the Maoris. The recruiting amongst tho Maori's is being directed by a Parliamentary Committee, consisting, of the Hon. Dr. Pomare, as chairman, the Hon. Sir James Carroll (Gisborne), tho Hon. A. T. Ngata (Eastern Maori), and Mr. Tau Henare (Northern Maori), each of these gentlemen carrying on tho work in his 'own constituency (says an ex-, change'). Asked in Auckland y.'licther lie was prepared to indicate how tho movement was progressing, the Hon. Dr. Pomare stated that lie did not care to mako any statement, on the subject until lie had compared notes with his colleagues of the committee, but ho hoped to mako an announcement as to tho position soon after his return to AVellington. Some Peculiarities. A peculiar feature of the recent registration (says a Cliristchurch message) is that although tho number of farmers and other men who live in tho country, and who are accustomed to rifling horses, have enlisted for tho infantry on finding tho mounted branch, full, and some drivers in tho city liavo also done so, many city men —labourers, tradesmen, artists, and clerks —whoso daily occupations do not take them anywhere near horses, liavo signed on only for tho mounted rifles. Another unsatisfactory feature is the large proportion of men who aro not _ prepared to go into camp until some little time has elapsed. Again there is a larger proportion than formerly of men who, having registered, failed to present themselves for med'eal examination. All the time the number of men who have been classed as temporarily unfit, and who have been provided with tho opportunity to' havo themselves mado ablo to comply with the requirements without cost to themselves, hut who havo failed to report again 'xi the recruiting officers, is growing larger. In view of tlieso facts the situation is exceedingly unsatisfactory. Rowland. Jeweller, 90 Manners Street, is the firm who are giving 15 per cent. (3s. in the JB) to soldiers or their friends when puroba'sing anything for them. Badges, wristlet watches, engagement rings, etc. See Rowland about it.—Advt.
