FARMERS' OWN SALEYARDS
$ ERECTION AT MARTON URGED. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Marton, February 11. In tho courso of his speech at tho opening of the, Marton show to-day, Mr. E. Nowman, M.P., referred to a, rather important matter affecting both-farm-ers and auctioneers. He stressed tho fact that thero was no more favoured spot on tho coast for a farmers' owned fat stock saleyards than at Marton. -Tliey would soon have ten big freezing concerns all drawing supplies from the Rangitikei district. Farmers all know the present system by which buyers practically fixed! prices. Ho was not of course referring to the conditions at tho present time, when all the meat was purchased by the English Government at fixed prices. However, speaking as a farmer and a director of a.'meat export company, ho could see great possibilities in central fat stock saleyards at Marton, where stock would be competed for, instead of the present system of buying. He had mentioned this matter two or three years ago, and' he did not intend to let the matter drop. The auctioneers now bought privately for some freezing companies, tue practice, he contended, being against both the freezing company and tho best interests of the farmer- He hoped it would soon bo stopped. Bearing in mind the increase in fat stock, which he said was suro to conic, he strongly urged upon farmers to tako up_ the question and build yards of their own at Marton, which he considered most suited for tho purpose.
