GIFT TOBACCO FUND

WHAT IT HAS DONE FOR OUR TROOPS A SPLENDID RESULT Our readers who contributed so generously through The Dominion' to the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces' Gift Tobacco Fund will be gratified to learn that" the funds subscribed have enabled a handsome distribution of cigarettes and tobacco to be made about Christmas time to our. soldiers at the front. The following letter which has just reached us from those entrusted with the expenditure of the funds acknowledged through The Dominion, will be read with interest as showing what has already been accomplished:— .Wellington, N.Z., February 8, 1916. The Editor The Dominion, Wellington. Dear Sir,—We beg to inform you that wo have received advice, under date December 7, from the manufacturers of the Three Castles cigarettes and Capstan tobacco, thai, m response to our cable they haye made arrangements to ship to tho officer commanding the New Zealand troops: 750,000 The Three Castles cigarettes, and 30001b. Capstan tobacco, mcd- • ium strength. The manufacturers also advise us , that tliey have added 15 per cent, to the value of the goods shipped; in other words, whereas we in-' .. etructed them to ship £1000 worth of tobacco .and . cigarettes, they have shipped £1150 worth of goods; the extra £150 worth being in the ' form of a special donation from themselves. They further advise that they have placcd on each,, packet of cigarettes and each tin of tobacco a small label witli the. , following wording:— ' ■ ."With compliments from the people of Now Zealand, through ; The Dominion newspaper." They have also placed in each outer' box of cigarettes and tobacco a; , Christmas card, bearing greetings from the people of Nov Zealand, : : ' and n postcard, addressed back to , the people of. Now Zealand, in ' order to enable flio recipients to acknowledge tho gift of The Dominion . newspaper on behalf of tho donors. We might also recall to your memory that a further £250 was / cabled to' the manufacturers some three weeks-ago, and no doubt the - acknowledgment from the manufacturers of this further sum is now in the mail.—Yours faithfully, THE NEW ZEALAND EXPEDI- - TIONARY FORCE GIFT TOBACCO FUND. [The fact that each package contained a greeting to tho men from the people of New Zealand will no doubt have given these Christmas gifts to our troops an added value, which the recipients would heartily appreciate.]
