CIVIL BUSINESS TWO DEFENDED ACTIONS In the Magistrate's Court yesterda Mr. AV. 6. Riddel], S.M., heard tl civil case in which James Smith Fo storekeeper, of Okato, Taranaki, pr ceeded against tho Union Steamsh Company to recover the sum of £! 3s. 5d., as damages for the loss < sacks of grass-seed short delivered. M H, _F. Von Haast appeared for tl plaintiff, while Mr. P. Levi appeared f< the Union Company. The grass-seed was part of a consigi ment shipped at Lyfctelton for New PI; mouth to bo' delivered in good cond tion to the plaintiff at Okato. It wi damaged by water and unshipped ; Wellington for early sale, because (tl fendants contended) any delay waul have caused further deterioration. After hearing the evidence the Magi: trate reserved his decision. Decision has also been reserved i the case of A. do 13. Brandon v. E W. Browne, in which the hearing con menoed on February 1. The claim i for £50, alleged to be due as damage arising out of a collision between motoi cars on the Paekakariki Hill. , UNDEFENDED CLAIMS. POLICE CASES. Mr. D. Gr._ A. Cooper, S.M., heard yesterday s police cases. Thomas Atkinson, a native of Tasmania, and Christina Atkinson were charged with stealing a portmanteau, containing articles valued at £15, tho property ol Annie Dutton. According to Sub-luspector Mackinnon, jMJtf. Dutton had logfc a left luggage ticket, and this had been found by "nomas Atkinson and given to tha female accused, who presented it and obtained the portmanteau. Subsequently Mrs. Dutton recognised some of her property being worn in the street, and this lead to the arte6t. The Magistrate recorded convictions in both cases Thorpas Atkinson being fined £5 45.,' and Christina Atkinson £2. Default was fixed at two months' imprisonment and fourteen days' imprisonment respectively, but time to find the money was allowed in each case. For drunkenness, John Alfred' Neileon and Robert M'Clure were fined 10s. each, in default to undergo 48 hours' imprisonment. Two first-offendinc inebnatos were also dealt with; . Decision was reserved in the? case against Reginald John Davis, who is [ charged with a breach of the Licensing Act at Porirua. Sub-Inspector Mackinnon conducted the case for the police, while Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for Hie defence. The hearing extended over three different days.
