BAYONET FIGHT ON A STAIRCASE
A soldier recounts a thrilling incident during tho fighting at Hulluch. "Wo had," ho says, "gained the village, but we hid to haug on until the support came up. While we were waiting our reserves wero fired upon by the men wo had left behind as prisoners. As I could not seo an officer I called on a few men to follow me, and wo wont to the house where tho enemy were. I got through a window, and one of the men followed me. On reaching the staircase wo were met _at tho top by an officer of a machine-gun. party, who were firing upon our inon. "I had a bayonet fignt with him, lasting about five minutes, and luckily for me his bayonet slipped and caught in the hook of my bayonet. _ Kien I thought of' my drill, and givino my riflo a. sudden twist Biinpped off his bayonet. I then grabbed at bis rifle and tried to disarm him, but lie fired, the bullet passing through mv hand. Ho saw the blood first, but know!that I bad tbe better of it begged ' r mercy, but 1 shot him dead for ':s. cowardice.
