MIRAMAR BOROUGH COUNCIL

\ LETTER FROM THE FIRE BRIGADE. At last night's, meeting of tlie Mira.jmar Borough Council tho Mayor (Mr. F. Townsend) presided, and there were also present: Councillors S. H. Unde'rj wood, M. Tracy, H. Hawthorn, S. M. Stone, and W. H. Green. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor J. Pollock. Two letters were received from the District Health Officer in reference to' the inspection of a house-at Miramar and another house at Seatoun. The letters suggested that the' council should take the necessary legal steps to have certain improvements effected at both houses. On the motion of Councillor Hawthorn, it was decided to place the matter in the'hands of the Borough Engineer. It wa-$ resolved to proceed against tho owners of one house for permitting what was alleged to be a nuisance. The Fire Brigade secretary (Mr. Geo. ■W. .Houchen) wrote, asking that bettor care should be taken of' the brigade's reel and hose. The writer pointed out the serious consequences that might follow if the reel and hose were not always ready for-use. It was also pointed 'out that in several places tho fire-plugs wore covered by a thick coating of metal, and could only be reached by the use of pick and shovel. Councillor Stone said that the brigade desired the council to leave the present reel and hose for the exclusive use of the brigade. If tho council needed hose for filling tanks, flushing drains, etc., another length -of liose should bo procured. The present state of affairs was causing dissatisfaction among members of the brigade because on tho occasion of the recent firo at the gas works the maximum length of hose was not available. . After considerable discussion it -was resolved to procure the necessary additional hose for -the use of the borough employees. A_ request for drainage and water on sections adjoining Toru Street and Para Street was referred to the engineer to be deait with. The Ladies' Swimming Club, Seatoun, wrote,_ asking for seating accommodation in the dressing-shed at Worser Bay, and it wiis resolved to carry out tho work. A roport from Councillor S. M. Stone, as captain of the Fire Brigade, stated th.lt the fire at tlie gas works on January 30 had been got under control in live minutes, and extinguished completely in ten minutes. The Mayor commented on the excellent work done by the brigade, and expressed the opinion that every possible encouragement should be ' given them. Tho councillors present were all of tho one opinion on this matter.
