Camp Bands.

; The establishment of a permanent camp band at Treutham lias been desired for a long' time by both officers and men: Permission : has now been granted by the Defence Department for a band of this character, to consist of 15 members, under Staff Sergeant-Major Cox, who has trained the various Reinforcements'■ bands during the past 14 months. The number of members is hardly sufficient for/a full band, and assistance 'will be given by members of lloinforcements in camp from time to time. At tho present time the 11th and 12th Reinforcements are in camp 'at Treutham, and the extra members •required for/tlie permanent band will be drawn from them. At the same time these Reinforcements are training bands of their own, and their requirements in the way of instruments aro to bo filled before those of tho permanent band. On, Tuesday next a concert vill be given at Upper Hutt, in aid of the llth Ueinforccment's baud, and later on similar concerts will be held at Lower Hutt and in tho Town Hall, Wellington. At all of these the permanent band is giving its services. After the Elevenths ,have been duly equipped, the Twelfth 'Reinforcement's band ,will have their wants attended to. It may be said that all the members of the permanent band are men ivlio have been found to be physically ineligible for. active service. Their duties in camp,' in addition to .their band/duties, include orderly duties and waiting at tho officers' mess. It is intended that the permanent band shall shortly be sproWded with silver instruments. For this purpose about £100 has been provided, but a larger sum is required. The assistant camp adjutant, Captain Bell, has tho matter in hand, and will he glad of any contributions to'the fund. All parades, route marches, and funerals are" now attended by tho Camp Band, a large proportion of the bandsmen of which are professional players.

Soldiers and Swimming. The interest taken by the various swimming and surf clubs in Wellington in the men in camp is much appreciated by theni. A life-saving reel and a springboard, for use at the soldiers'" bathing, place in the Hutt River, are among the gifts. Practical testimony of the soldiers' appreciation of these is to be found in the fact that numbers of them aro in training for various events to be held in Wellington shortly, including the swimming carnival to be held at the Boys' Institute baths on February 11, and others to be held by swimming clubs. On . Sunday special leave was given to'men in camp to have swimming practice in the Hutt River.

Wireless Troop. 'A wireless troop, consisting of an officer, 6 N.C.O.'s, and 1 55 of other ranks, is now in training at Trentham, the full title of the body being tho Wireless Troop and Pack Transport Section. The Post and Telegraph Department was asked to provide equipment, which arrived at tlie camp yesterday, arid work in this section is proceeding steadily from to-day onwards. It is expected that it will have completed the necessary training' by the beginning of March. Rowland, Jeweller, 90 Manners Street, is the firm who are giving 15 per cent. (3a. in the .£) to soldiers or their friends when purchasing anything for them. Badges, wristlet watches, encasement rings, etc. See Eowland about it.—Advt.
