THE ATTACK ON ; THE ORTERIO. By Telegraph—Presß Association—Ooßyri'hl Sydney, January 25. Two officers, survivors of the Orteric (6535 tons, Dank Line), which was torpedoed off .Alexandria on December 10, have arrived. They relate that the Orteric carried 10,000 tons of nitrate of soda, tho ship and cargo being valued at half a million sterling. A submarine was sighted in the afternoon. The captain attempted to outmanoeuvre' the submarine, which commenced to fire immediately, and the yHreless gear was Rhot away.* The captain decided to surrender, and a white flag was hoisted, but was ignored 'by tho submarine, which continued to firo all tho nioro vigorously. Four boats worn launched, and a shell destroyed one, killing and wounding several Chinese. The other three escaped. .The submarine then approached and fired a torpedo, and the Orteric sank in five minutes, after a terrific explosion. The surviyors were nicked up by a hospital ship, which ■ later picked up the crew of the Pusiris (2705 tons, Moss S.S. Co.), which wastorpedoed previously.
