STEAMERS ARRIVING
NOT TO BE REQUISITIONED,
In these times when ships are very badly needed anxiety has been generally felt as to the possibility of the Copimonwealth Government requisitioning for war purposes certain New Zealand steamers calling at Australian ports before arriving here. "I communicated a few days ago with the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth on the subject," said Mr. Massey yesterday, "and this morning I received a telegram from the Hon. Mr. Hughes stating that the Commonwealth Government did not intend to interfere with the ships referred to." (The vessels in question are the insulated liners Ashburton, Berwick Law, Arrino, and Calliope.)
■ "I have also communicated with' the Imperial Government on the subject of their commandeering certain New Zealand traders," added Mr. Massey.
