CITY CRICKET
NORTH & EAST MEET EAST HOLDS STRONG LEAD Saturday was an ideal cricket tiny, anil a fair crowd was present at the Basin .Reserve, where East and North met, and where Central played University. The Bast-North, match was expected by some to lie closely contested, and a great deal of interest was taken in the event. So far there seems to be little prospect of a close finish. East appears to have tho match won already, and, after all, this in accoitl with the season's form. North have done nothing this season to entitle them to be ranged with East. liust took first strike, and they made ,212 runs. Gibbes fell just short of the century with !)7, Baker got 41, and Hutch, ings 33. These three bats made nearly SOU, but the "tail" proved to be a loug one, and tho end came rapidly. A feature of Midline's short innings was his brilliant dismissal by Southall, who took a lightning catch low down, and almost but of reach. North were all disposed of for 101. Wagstafl'e, Crombie, and Wilkinson, were tho only batsmen in the side to make a stand. At lower Hutt, where the wicket was in capital order, Old Boys mot Hutt, and, as a Tesult of the first day's play, the scores are greatly in favour of tho Old Boys' team. Going in first, Old Boys lost five wickets for 64 runs, but a good stand then by Christie and Marris carried the scoto to 140 before MaTris was disposed of. Later (for the eighth wicket) Christie and Wills added 99 runs, Christie's contribution to the total of 291 i for the innings, being 110. His century waa a splendid effort for. such a ycung player. Hutt had lost seven wickets for 99 runs when stumps wero drawn, and appaa-ently have no chance of victory. EAST & NORTH. East—First Innings. Baker, c. Windley, b. Hiddleston 11 Gibbes, b.
