WANCiANUI HARBOUR. A report has been received by tho Wanganui Harbour Board from the engineer (Mr. C. H. noworth) in regard to the best method of dealing with the shoal in the river at the end of the north training wall. Mr. Howorth stated that the ehoal was caused by the widening of the channel from 500 to 750 feet, deep water leaving the. wall and striking over towards the south 6pit. In order to properly train the current and maintain an even scour, tho extension of.the south training will should be carried but to a point indicated, on a plan attached to the report. T)ie cost would be £6300 for a half-tido wall, and Mr. Howorth did not recommend the work, as neither the funds nor -a sufficient amount of rubblo were available. He did not consider it advisable to extend the north training wall, as the current would hug tho concave curve of the south wall if it was extended. He recommended that tiio shoal should be dredged when the dredge could bo spared. The cost to give a depth of 14ft. 6in. would not bo heavy. The estimated amount of sand to be dredged would be 8000 cubic yards, and the cost would not exceed £2£o. A suggestion was made that tho lights should be shifted to get tho be6t uee of the deep water, and the matter was referred to the engineer and pilot to report, upon. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. A.
