BRITISH CEREAL CROPS

A preliminary statement, showing the estimated total produce and yield .per acre of the principal cereal crops of England and Wales for tho year 1915, together with comparisons for 1914, has been issued by tho Board of Agriculture and Fisheries. 'Die wheat yield is reckoned at 8,490,692 quai-tors, as against 7,307,036 quarters in 1914; barley, 4,505,069 quarters and 6,173,948 quartern; oats, 10,432,128 and 9,553,727. quarters respectively. In 1914 tho wheat' crop represented 32.24 bushels per acre, whilst for tho current year the percentage was 3J .30 bushels, the figures for barley 32.82 and 29.60, aud for oats 39.61 and-'10.05 bushels per •acre. Victoria is likely to have.a somewhat considerable surplus of barley this season, and'the statistics given above bear out statements made in private communications which have been received from London, to tho effect that a market for at least a moderate proportion of the supply in excess of local needs might be found in the United Kingdom, provided freight difficulties can be overcome. Lighter crops of peas and beans also are looked, for, and there is a falling off in the production of hay.

_It has been stilted that it is impossible tu grow liiccrnc successfully in Ulcelahuna, says the "Express." but 111'. T. Bedding litis disproved that theory. Last season lie put down t'lirco-nuarters of an acre. It took' ;v good deal of attention in cultivation W get it established, hut now it is in full growing order as a samplo branch .sonio '-'{ft. in length showed. Mr. Redding says lie will get four cuttings from t'he plot this year, and thai ,very little attention to it will bo needed from now i)ll.
