General Castlenau, interviewed bv an American correspondent at Athens, said tlie situation at Salonika was excellent. Hp had rarely seen an emplacement lend itself better for defencc. It also provides tho most favourable conditions for the offensive. Asked whether the Allied forces contemplated taking the offensive from Salonika iu_ tlie spring, lio replied: "Spring will tell. It is impossible to discount the exigencies of tho military situation so far ahead, but should _we decide upon an offensive from Salonika it will, be under peculiarly favourable conditions." Asked how soon the war would be flnislied, lie replied: "That does not matter; the ■material thing is victory, and that is certain sooner or later. In Franco every Frenchman and Frenchwoman is ready to go the whole way for complete triumph., There will be no weakening.' France is not only determined, but France is also sure."
