CHRISTMAS LAMB
FOR THE SOLDIJSRS,
. The baron lof beef of Old England; and even the succulent roast goose of tradition, pale into •insignificance in ■point of general popularity in these parts with the roast lamb of New Zealand. .There is a lot. of. lamb, figuring on menus that has; outgrown its genoration and become more mutton long before it faces the butcher's knife; but given real lamb, served' up with young green peals, and Hutt kidney potatoes, and you have'a dish for a' king. Tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) probably had this idea when he solicited contributions_ of lambs from the. various meat freezing companies, , and for having done 60 "the. boys in khaki" who hapSen to be in Wellington on Cliristmas 'ay will oall him blessed. The response to the request has been vory satisfactory. So far tlio Mayor lias been advised of' the following contributions:— Lambs. Gear Meat Co. 20 Barber and Co. 10 Longburn Freezing Co.' 20 Borthwick's (Christ-church) 20 Nelson Bros. (Tomoana) 20 Gisborne Sheepfarmers' Freezing Co. 10 Hawke'g Bajr Farmers' Co 10 Kinross, White, and Co 10 Wanganui Freezing Co. 10 l'okomaru Bay Freezing Co. ......... 30 Total 160 In addition to the above the Invercargill Freezing Works are sending £10 and~ the Auckland Freezing Company a monetary contribution' towards the some laudable object. It should be mentioned in : this connection that the Wellington Meat Freezing Company is contributing its quota to the feast in the shape of plum ; puddings, without which disn no British Christmas dinner, is oomplete.
