NATIONAL FUND FOR EDUCATION

TO PROVIDE FOR FUTURE LAND AND BUILDINGS. ,- By Telesraph.—Press AesoolaMon. Napier, December 10. The Hon. J. A. Hanan, Minister of Education,_ replying to representations made to him to-day, said that he deemed it his duty to state plainly that at the present time he was not prepared, owing to the \ financial conditions consequent on the war, and .the need to keep down <fcho public expenditure to the lowest possible limit without impairing efficiency, to promise & vote for a secondary school; or for-a site for one. In connection with primary education and primary schools, many applications ■were coming in for financial assistance to acquire new sites, in order to have sufficient ground for new buildings and playground areas. The question of scrapping buildings, primary and secondary, and of acquiring large areas of .land for each school .would involve a largo sum of money. It would be mach larger if the time was allowed to go by and properties went up in value. A national scheme was therefore required to provide for a Bum. of money being set aside by Parliament to meet such requirements later on. He proposed to draw up a schedule of the claims of technical schools, primary schools, and for secondary schools, in order to. seo what-money would be necessary for the purpose. A national scheme on this subject should bo formu- , lat'ed and submitted to the National Cabinet.
