NOT ENOUGH MEAT

SHIPS CANNOT BE PILLED THE ABNORMAL SEASON. In marked contrast'with the state of affairs in ilio latter part of last summer, tho steamers with insulated space •which, have lately been loading, liavc been unable to find sufficient cargoes of meat to fill their space. The season is a little late in beginning, and the Prime Minister, referring to the position generally yesterday said that farmers would not be well advised to delay the season much longer. "Several steamers have left New Zealand for London recently with their insulated space only partly filled with frozen meat," said Mr. Massey. "This is, of course, owing to the abnormal season wo are experiencing. 1 i.ujjjibso there never was so much grass in tho North Island as thero is at present. Store stock are in strong demand and aro consequently selling at high prices. 'Knowing the difficulty of replacing their fat stock, with stores, farmers nre in jio hurry to send the former to tho' freezing works. 'Tho-wet season with consequent delay in shearing operations is also a very important factor, but w'hat is happening now may lead to serious difficulty later, as in tho 'beginning of the year (say. in I'ebruary) there will probably ho a rush to the freezing works with which neither the works nor the shipping may bo able to cope. I would adviso farmers, therefore, in, their own'.interests, where it is possible for them to do so, to assist in keeping the works going, and so avoid a similar difficulty 'to that which we experienced last season." Tho Star of Scotland leaves to-day carrying 3500 carcasses less than her capacity, and she Ijas waited ten days for meat. ?.? The Karanica left on November 28 1500 carcasses short. . Tho Orari, now loading, is filling part of her insulated spaco with general • cargo. Tho Kaikoiira sailed about a week ago with her lower 'hold filled, with general cargo.
