A SOLDIER AND A WATCH
INFORMATION DISMISSED'
Some amusing features distinguished a case heard in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, when Mr. D, G. A. Cooper, S.M., was on the bench. A member of the Bth Reinforcements named James Dougall was dharged with stealing a watch, valued at 305., the property of Frederick Williamson. Inspector Hendrey informed the Magistrate that although th© accused had taken the watch it was doubtful - if there was any felonious intent on his part. Some conversation took place between accused and tho men with whom ho was associated,' and tho subject turned to country of birth. Williamsou appeared to have made a remark that he came from Berlin, and the accused thereupon took his watch and walked off. A constable was informed, and on catching up with tho accusea recovered the watch. The Magistrate took a lenient view of the case and dismissed the information on tho understanding that'accused should pay 10s. expenses .to the informant for attendance at court. CHARGES QF THEFT. A remand until Friday next was granted in tho case t-gainsfc a young man named Vivian Gillebrand A.6quitJa, who was charged with the theft <sf £16 10s., the moneys of James Jfewebt. Tie information had hsenkid at Braemar, South Canterbury. Inspector Hendrey stated that tho young man had admitted tak'ng some of the money, but not all of it. Tho Magis- , Irate fixed bail at £25. . Robert Young, 52 yeans of age, pleaded guilty to theft of goods valued at £1, the property of Walter M'lntyro. A fine of £2 was imposed, tho alternative being seven days' imprisonment. ' MOTORISTS FINED. Leslie. AVilkinson, wlij admitted having. ridden a motor-cycle at an excessive speed round the' corner of Cuba Street and Manners Sweet, was lined 205., with costs and . witnesses' expenses totalling 19s: J. E. Fitzgerald did not appear to answer a charge of having left a motor-car unattended in the street. Tho evideuco was that there was no tail light on the oar, and tho defendant was penalised .with fines and costs totalling £1 4s. George Wonnocott, for having no tail light on his motor-car, was fined 55., with court costs 7s. A similar peralty was imposed in"the caso of Raymond Phillip Petty, who was charged with having drawn up a motor-car in such a manner as to obstruct street traffic. otelerToases. Alexander Gilmer, for whom Mr. H. F. O'Loary appeared, was called upon to answer two summonses charging liiili with drunkenness and with using 00-6ceno 6ceno language. After bearing the ovidenco tho Magistrate recorded convictions on both charges. Ti.o penalty witii costs and witnesses' expenses totalled r£4, default being fixed j'.t ono month's imprisonment. 'Gilmer was allowed fourteen, days in which' to find tho money. 'Joseph Murphy, charged with insobriety, was lined 405., in default to undergo seven days' imprisonment. It was his fourth conviction during tho past 6ix monthc William Connelly, against whom there was only ono conviction in tho samo period, was fined 10s." for insobriety,, tho alternative being 48 hours' imprisonment.
William Henry Curroy, for allowing n chimney to catch fire at 52 Nairn Street, was fined 55., and ordered to pax 7s. court costs. *'
