PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
WELLINGTON SOCIETY'S WORK. ' The annual report of the Wellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has been circulated. Following are extracts from tho report:— Your committee are glad to be ablo to report/ that in the past year useful work has been done by your society, both in enforcing the law for the ]irotection of animals, and' also in promoting public opinion on tho subject, which, they are glad to say, grows stronger , year by year. This latter purpose has ever been steadily, in view, vour committee having always considered its support to be the most effective means of carrying out the objects of your society. The number of cases actually dealt with during the year was 284, 'but this does not by any means represent tho efforts of your; society. The society is again indebted to tho T. G. Macarthy Trustees for a donation of £100, and the Wellington City Council for their annual donation of £5, also to the holders of tickets for the concert' abandoned on the outbreak of war, who generously donated the value of their tickets instead of claiming refund. Our best thanks are also again due: to the Railway Department, tho. Karori, Miramar, and Eastbourne Borough Councils for free-passes granted to the society's inspector. At the request of members of the society the committee invited contributions for a fund administered by a special committee' of the Royal S.P.C.A., London, for.providing nieans of assisting the Army Veterinary Corps in 'their work among the wounded horses. Up to the end of the financial year nearly £30 had been sent Homo, and grateful letters in acknowledgment have been received.' The grea,t part of this sum came from the Wairarapa and Manawatu districts.' ~
: We.'desire.ito-give special acknowledgment to the intelligent and sympathetic action of all -.branches of the Police Force, not only in actually enforcing the law, forestalling and preventing ■ it.;: r ,,JYe'i:ha've also to -recognise with gratitude tho aid of the Press: of the country, to'which we are indebted for its publications on our behalf, for its. direct advocacy of t'he causo and for the prominence given to the cases wliich are brought before the Court.
■Your committee makes an -urgent apx peal to the public for such substantial support as will enable tho society to maintain and extend its usefulness.
