WELLINGTON GREEKS AND THE WAR

SYMPATHY WITH THE ALLIES,

A mcetingof Greek subjects was held at tho Commonwealth Cafe yesterday afternoon with tho object of passing a resolution expressing sympathy with tho Allies. The meeting was largely attended and most enthusiastic, Mr. Nicholas Femandos, convener of the meeting, 'was voted to the chair, and explained the object of tho meeting, adding that he had been in communication with Greek residents in Auckland, suggesting that a similar meeting should be held in that city. This meeting had now been held, and ho was in receipt of tho resolution-passed, which expressed sympathy with the' Entente Powers and regrot at the delav in Greek intervention on their behalf. The meeting decided to forward tho resolution to Mr. F. Dyer, Vice-Consu l for Greece for the Dominion, to be cabledl to Athens. Yesterday's meeting unanimously passed tho following resolution, propose ed by the chairman and seconded by Mr. Stevenos Mazarachi:—','That we Greek residents of Wellington and surrounding districts, although far removed from the theatre of the great war . . . , have been watching tho trend of events through tho cablegrams that reach us, aiid, appreciating the great benefits that'have accrued to us through living under the British flag, wo bog to offer to tho Allies our deepest sympathy, and wo trust that our Government'at home may well seo fit to join them in their fight for freedom and right." The chairman' was instructed to hand the resolution to tho Greek Consul in order that it should be cabled to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. It was also resolved that the resolution should be cabled to M. Venizelos. A subscription taken'up in .the room in aid of the Red Cross Funds resulted in a sum of £28 10s. being collected The contributors were:—N. Fernandos, £5; Gerondis Bros., £5; D. The total amount has been forwarded to tlie Greek Con-, sul, with instructions to hand the same to his Worship the Mayor.
