THE POST OFFICE
BUSINESS OF LAST QUARTER GOOD RETURNS Tlie revenue returns of t'he Post ani Telegraph Department for September quarter, which have now been completed, show very satisfactory results, particularly when it is remembered that tlio increased charges imposed for war tax purposes were only in force during tho last week of the quarter. Tlie total increase in revenue over September quarter of last year was £70,000. This, however, must be discounted by £52,000 telephone exchange revenue, which fell into the quarter on. account of t'he altered dates on which rentals fall due, leaving a real increase of £18,000 in the total revenue as compared with the same quarter of tho previous year.
There was a marked increase in tho money-order commission. The number of orders dealt with, however, showed a slight decrease. As the number of postal notes issued showed a considerincrease, it may fairly be inferred that postal notes are still replacing money orders for amounts of £1 and over.
Tho revenue for postages increased by over £14,0C0.
Tliere was an increase of over £3000 in the revenue from telegrams. Ordinary telegrams and bureau telegrams each show an increase, both in the number of messages and in tho revenue derived tiherefrom. There lias been a decrease in tho number of Press telegrams, but this has been coupled with an increase in the revenue, a fact no doubt accounted for by the increased length of individual messages^ The savings bank deposits amounted to no fewer than £3,611,506, and exceeded tho withdrawals by £606,014, a result which shows that the public of New Zealand during this time of war has not abated its confidence in the Post Office Savings Bank as the repository for their money.
