SOLDIER'S SUICIDE
While attending to his duties in the Botanical Gardens at about 10 o'clock on Saturday, morning, one of the gardeners heard a shot fired a few yards away. He went to investigate, and found a soldier in uniform lying dead, shot through the roof of the mouth. A revolver was lying beside the body. Subsequent investigation showed that the unfortunate soldier was William Hancock, aged 31 years, a nativo of Cornwall, England. He had enlisted at Reef ton in the Main Expeditionary Force, and had served at the front in the New Zealand Field Engineers. He was invalided home, but had; rejoined, and was given non-commissioned rank in the 11th Reinforcements. A note was found on deceased's body stating that it was his intention to do away with himsolf.
