The Hon. A. L. Herdman, AttorneyGeneral, arrived from the soutli by tho Maori yesterday morning. News has been received here ' that Mr. F. F. Newman, sou of Dr. Newman, M.P., who went to England some mouth's ago to join the Army there, has obtained a commission in the Royal Field Artillery. Dr. W. Beedie, of Kimbolton, hoe been appointed medical superintendent of tho Dannevirke Hospital. Thero ivero seven applicants.—Press Association. Dr. A. Temple Perkins, of Wellington, received cabled advice yesterday that his son, Liout. E. A. T. Perkins, R.F.A., is a survivor from the transport Marquette, which was torpedoed iu the Aegean Sea a few days. ago. Lieut. Perkins left the Dominion with tho main body of tho New Zealand Expeditionary Force, but along, with others he went through the officers' training course iu Egypt, and was given a- commission in the Royal Field Artillery. A Press Association message from' Sydney (received last evening) recordß tho death of James Hazlitt, the international cricketor. Mr. R. Keeno left for Auckland and North Cape by last night's express. Ho expects to return about the end of December. Tho death occurred at Mornincton, on Saturday,' of Mr. W. J.Bowles, well known in tho Railway Service 20 years ago. Mr. Bowles arrived ;n New Zealand in 1875, and shortly after ho came to Wellington he took servico witli the Railway DepartmentHe served in various capacities in the Now Zealand Railways for upwards of 20 years,.-finally retiring in 1899. Mr. Bowles had attained the ripe ace of 84 years at the timo of his death.
