LAWN TENNIS
' NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. The committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, in its annual report, places on record its high appreciation of the services rendered the association by Mr. P. AVhite-Parsons, and says it was with sincere regret that tho resignation was accepted. That of Mr. F. B. Spilsbury was also accepted, and the committee wished him a speedy and safe return from tho seat of war. It was decided by the Management Committee on tho application of tho Wellington Provincial Lawn Tonnis Association that the meeting be held in Wellington. In view of tlie great- national disturbance, still unsettled, of tho individual, losses sustained by the people wliiose husbands, brothers, or sons have gone to the front, and by reason of the fact that a large proportion of tennis players- have enlisted, the Management Committee decided to approach affiliated associations with the suggestion that tho .1915 New Zealand Championship Meeting be cancelled. In overy case the reply was favourable to cancellation, and notice was given accordingly to all associations'. The sum «f £78 was handed to the Prime Minister as a contribution by affiliated tenuis players of the Dominion to the Dominion Relief Fund. During the year tho sum of £2100 was distributed* by the Australasian Association amongst its affiliated associations, New Zealand receiving £300 as its share of tlio Davis Clip matches. The £2100 distributed represented a portion of the proceeds of - matches held in connection with Davis Cup contests, but not actually part of the Davis Cup Fund as defined by the rules of the association in which fund the New Zealand Association has a special interest. Replies aro. being obtained _ from associations as to tho advisability of fostering the inter-island matches and school children's championships. With reference to school children's championships, the idea is that local associations may hold championship tournaments and eventually the winners each district to play for the New Zealand sibly fit tlio time and place where tho New Zealand Championship Meeting is held. As to inter-Island matches, it is hoped that encouragement may bo given t-o first and_ second grade players to travel and improve their game. The present is not an opportune time to press these matters, therefore the Management Committee is only collecting information for the lime being. Regarding tournament conditions, the committee expresses tho opinion that the right to rehandicap players after the first round should not continuo. That all events advertised to be played should be played, but recognises that in handicap events a minimum of entrants is permissible. The committee approving tournaments tc have power to limit the number to four as a minimum if it thinks fit. Ihe year closes with an excess of expenditure over income of £68 6s. lOd. Tho total receipts in connection with the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Championships at Duncdiii last year amounted to £123 6s. 6d., the payments to £96 12s. lid., leaving a. profit of £26 ]3s. 7d., from which a bonus of £2-j was granted to the secretary, leaving a net profit on the meeting of £1 I3sl 7d. for the association.
