WHICH TEST FOR BOWLS?

AH INTERESTING LETTER. In writing to thank Mr. Thomas Bush, of Wellington, "for your prompt action with regard to the rescinding of .a resolution prohibiting tho use of composition bowls, or rather 'othor bowls than wood,' " in tho council of the Dominion Bowling Association, tho secretary of the Excelite Works, of Mortlake, England, writes interestingly on the subject of bowl-testing, about which there is a decided oleavage of opinion among bowlers in New Zealand.

"From a manufacturer's point of view," . states the letter, "the outdoor green tost for various reasons is not a practicable or commercial one, the principal reason being its uncertainty. The loading bowl manufacturers over here, of course, use an indoor test, in most cases, we believe, a table test. Personally, we favour the floor test, with a minimum of 30ft to 36ft. run. We claim tho test should be a mechanical one from tho putting of the bowl on tho starting machine until the bowl stops running, and it is necessary to ensure correct testing that the surface over which the -bowl runs should be dead level, and of a nature not liable to any climatic or othet variation. With a green test variation is bound to occur, as the green, beiug more or less a living thing, is constantly changing. Moreover, with the outdoor test it has been proved that even wind is an important factor to contend with, and lias a considerable influence oil the running of tho bowl, in addition to which, unless the testing machine is'constantly moved, grooving results, whioh is very detrimental to correct testing. In some recent public demonstrations carried out under the auspices of the English Bowling Association, held at one of the leading London olubß on a very fine green, it was particularly notioed that tho ran of even the standard test bowl varied considerably in consecutive trials, and at the end of the day's demonstration the operator himself had to admit that the outdoor test was too unreliable to bo of any official use."

The tournament in aid of the Christ' mas Fund, arranged for Labour Day, was abandoned on account of the weather. The financial results, however, were very satisfactory. During the afternoon' a hat wan a-uotioned, and the amount obtained therefor will be added to the club's donation.
