PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

HALF-YEAR'S BALANCE-SHEET,

There were present at Tuesday's meeting of the Petone Borough Council the Mayor (Mr. J. H. M'Ewan), and Councillors Cox, Brocklebank, Anderson, Jones, M'Dougall, M'Kenzie, and Trueman.

The Under-SeoTetary, Department of Internal Affairs, stated in a letter that the council's suggestion that 10 acres of the Wilford Estate should be set apart as a reserve had been referred to the Lauds Department to deal .with. _ The New Zealand Catholic Federati<sh asked for the co-operation of the council in' tho matter of censorship of picture films, and requested that a delegate bo sent to a conference of representatives to discuss the matter. It was Tesolved to support ilie movement, and Councillor Anderson was appointed delegate. •The engineer's report stated that building permits had been granted for three buildings and seven additions, of a total value of £1895. Permits were granted for buildings during the year of an aggregate value of £22,094. The sewage engineer's report showed tho total cost of the sanitary scheme to date was £42,897 14s. 9d. Tho gas manager's report was also received. The balance-sheet for the half-year onded September 30 was placed before the council. In dealing with the balancesheet, the Mayor explained that the debit had increased by £3482, but tho rates coming in during the current halfyear would have the effect of reducing that. The expenditure shown was pretty well up to tlie estimate for the six months. With care on tho part of the council the account should be in a satisfactory position at the end of the year. The waterworks maintenance account showed a debit of £600, but with £1400 rates to come in during the present half-year. The gas working account showed a small credit balance of £17 ss. lid., but in addition to that £250 had been transferred to tho renewals account and £250 to tlie general account. In. tho sewerage loan account there was available for expenditure tho sum of £19,400, and that should be ample to complete the work. The beach improvement loan has a credit balance of £1029 os. 7d. Taking accounts as a whole, there did not seem to him to be any gravn reason to be dissatisfied with the position.
