NOTES AND COMMENTS
IBy Glencoe.l The Masterton Rating Club's Spring Meeting—a one-day fixture—will bo held ou the Opaki racecourse to-day. Wellington patrons who intend being present to-clay can secure excursion fares on the mail train which leaves Lambton Station at 7.50 a.m. The return train leaves Opaki at 5.50 p.m.
A big field is engaged in the Trial Stakes, live l'urlongs, and in the absence ol' Two Lights, the Higliideii-lrained Hedd-el-Bahr may bo tho choice if ho draws anything like an inside berth. Menelaus, the full-brother to Nones, aud Lady General, who was thought good enough to take to Avondalo for tho Stakes, are also engaged.
Keceilt form points to Botanist, Sst. (ilb., in tho Telephone Hack Handicap, whilo in the open sprint event the Australianbred Three, who is to have W. Bell in the saddle, should bo much sought after.
Several New Zealand Cup candidates arc engaged in the Spring Handicap, but with ItinaUlo, Sst. 01b., so well Handicapped, backers may probably eonfino their attentions to him, especially when it is remembered that he carried more weight at his last appearance at Trentiiem, and appeared to be very unlucky to lose. Pavlova, Ost. 21b., ran very badly at Levin, but she may ,be coming on. Multiply, Sst. Sib., will have Deelev in the saddle, and Maniaroa, S'j. lib., winner of the Horowhenua Cup, wilt liavo Emerson in the saddle. This horse's performance at Levin was a good one, as ho covered a lot of extra ground at the homo turn.
In the Ladies'" Bracelet Ruatanjjata, who is thoroughly seasoned, may have most admirers.
A big field is engaged in the Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, and this is the race thai will give students of form Jncst to think about. The top-weight, Montana, won with Dst. 3lb. at Otaki, and the same week scored in open event at Napier. On form he holds Maltegardo •safe., Husfiabye, Sst. 81b., races well under weight, anil the distance will suit Ladogeur, who should be-a better horso for the race he had at Napier. Martyress, 7st. i3lb., goes seven furlongs well, and Bronlc Dclaval, 7st., with such a big puil in the weights, must be dangerous.
Mia Cara, Bst. 31b.,' is well hawlicapped in the Stewards' Handicap. Tho Wanganui and Marton winner goes seven furlongs well, and she will bo much fancied, more especially if Itiualdo, her stable companion, scores in tho big race.
The concluding event is the Dash Handicap, five furlongs, in which there are several smart beginners engaged. If- the top-weight Miramba is lucky in the draw for places at the barrier, she will be iery hard to catch, as just now she is snowing great brilliancy over short courses.
