Over 300 soldiers in the s isolation area at Livnrpool Camp broke away and bombarded their guards with I ' jam- tins and other missiles. They burned the tents and cleared. GERMAN AND A REVOLVER. ; Sydney, October 13. naturalised German named Becker has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for ■ sending a revolver through tho post. His defence was that the revolver belonged to a friend and he was returning it. Ho pleaded ignorance of the law. Becker had been previously convicted of contravention of the War Precautions Act. The Magistrate, in sentencing Becker ; said: "My reading of your nationality is that you are ignorant of nofhin# that is hurtful to other people." CERMAN TRADERS IN THE PACIFIC. Referring to the firm of German planters who are alleged to be doing business in Tonga and • Samoa, Mr.' Hughes (Federal Attorney-General) said that 'he had received no official intimation of the existence of any case. . He was unable to deal with any firm operating between Tonga and New Zealand. "Until they try to do business with' Australia," he said,- "it is entirely a .matter for the New Zealand Government." It is stated in Federal Labour circles that Mr. Fisher _ (the Federal Prime Minister) is retiring from active politics to succeed Sir George Reid as Australian High Commissioner. It is understood that he will not retire before Parliament meets on October 27. TRIBUTE TO SIR CEORGE REID. (Rec. October 13, 11.35 p.m.) London, October 13. The "Daily Chronicle," in a subleader, emphasises Sir George : ReidV public-spirited offer, and adds: "We will welcome Mr. Andrew Fisher, but will regret Sir Georgo Reid's retirement-." Sir George Rcid has served Australia well. He has been a most influential Ambassador for the Commonwealth, and has rnado Australia known and understood in tho Motherland, as no other agent or High Commissioner has done for any Dominion. He has been an efficient envoy and a splendid commercial traveller."
